5th Grade

Mrs. Byars

Room 19

My name is Janis Byars. I grew up in Arcadia, California and then went to the University of California at Santa Barbara where I received my Bachelors Degree in Sociology.  During my time at UCSB, I spent one semester living in Madrid, Spain where I learned how to communicate in Spanish.  After attending UC Santa Barbara, I went to Sierra Nevada College in Lake Tahoe where I earned both my California and Nevada teaching credentials.  I earned my Masters Degree in Human Behavior at National University in 2006, and I also have my California Bilingual Certificate for teaching in Spanish.  I have taught in Monrovia Unified School District (4 years), Torrance Unified School District (14 years) and Redondo Beach Unified School District (4 years) in the second, third, fourth and fifth grades.

I live here in Redondo Beach with my husband, Brad, and our two amazing children, Amy (age 11) and Ethan (age 8 ½), who go to Washington Elementary School.  In my spare time I like to do things with my family, walk our 3 year old boxer, named Montana, and go to the beach.  I feel very lucky to be part of the Beryl Bunch and am looking forward to a fantastic year with my fifth graders!

Mrs. Trauner

Room 18

I am excited to be a part of the 5th grade team again this year!  I have taught for 6 years; in addition to Beryl, I have taught 6th grade in Seattle, WA and 1st grade in Fresno, CA.  My husband’s job has moved us around the West Coast, but we are excited to call Southern California home for a while.

I am originally from a suburb outside of Chicago, called Wheaton, IL.  I went to college at Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN where I received my bachelor’s in elementary education with a reading specialty.  I am a proud boilermaker! Although, don’t ask me about our football team…

In my spare time, my husband and I are always hiking, backpacking, or rock climbing somewhere in this great state!  Our most recent trip was to Grand Teton National Park where we explored Cascade Canyon and enjoyed white water rafting.  As you can tell, I am a huge outdoor fan and excited to lead our 5th graders during OSS!
